Kentucky Traditions Series Fundraiser

SouthEast Telephone and Maker's Mark hosted a fundraiser for the Pike County Artisan Center Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Mark II in Pikeville. The event included a silent auction with items from area businesses and artists and a bourbon tasting and history lesson with Maker's Mark's Rob Samuels. Guests even had the opportunity to hand-dip their own bottles of Maker's Mark in red wax. The event was a great success--thanks to everyone in our community who worked hard to make the evening so special, and to all of our guests who so generously donated funds to support the arts in Pike County.

December 4, 2009: Works from Pam Oldfield Meade and sculptor Tom Dant
To end the year at the Artisan Center, White Oak, KY, artist Pam Oldfield Meade will showcase her paintings for the month of December. Pam was last featured at the Artisan Center as part of the Regional Artists Showcase in April 2009; December's exhibit will be her first solo exhibition at the Center. Working in mixed media, including oil, acrylic, pen, and other materials, Pam says, "I am inspired to create art by so many things; I'll simplify by saying people, places and things. Things of beauty, things of past. People good and bad. Places I go sometimes only in a dream. And always by the place where I live and work, my studio in White Oak, Kentucky." Wolfe County, KY resident and sculptor Tom Dant will also be featured in this exhibit. In the early 1990’s he began chainsaw carving as a hobby. His first pieces were large “heads” blending Appalachian, Meso-American, and South Pacific influences. He soon progressed to carving stone sculptures from various mediums including Appalachian sandstone, Indiana limestone, alabaster, and marble. He employs extensive use of negative space to create inner tension, depth, and individuality to his three dimensional pieces. The tactile quality is also of major importance because he wants to give the viewer a literal as well as intellectual “feel” for the pieces.

The exhibit will remain on display through January. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to view and purchase works from these two amazing Kentucky artists!
